How Independent is Your Seat?

In order to have an independent seat, riders have to be able to keep their pelvis and trunk neural while moving their arms and legs independently. This video shows a great way to check yourself, and work on improving the independence of your seat while you’re off the horse!

STEP 1️⃣ Lay down on your back with your feet flat on the floor STEP 2️⃣ Press your lower back down into the floor

💡 TIP: If you have trouble feeling that your back is pressed down, try putting a hand under the small of your back to help determine if you’re maintaining an equal pressure.

Now Check: 🤔 Can you keep your low back pressed down into the floor while you take a few deep breaths? While you raise and lower one arm or one leg? Both arms? Both legs?

You should be able to keep your low back pressed down during all of these movements. If you have trouble with one, keep practicing! It will get easier! If you think this is super easy, stay tuned for more advanced options 💪

Bonus points if your cat is as cute as mine! 😻
